I'm going to introduce you to my weekend addiction.
Seriously, I look forward to Friday nights all week. Two words: Blues Dancing.
For those of you (as in the majority of people) who have not heard of blues dancing, it's a style that developed from blues music... Betcha could've guessed that one. It's got the same feeling, emotion, and connection that the music does. It's super relaxed and freestyle, and basically anything can be taken and bluesified, you can make it your own! Blues enables you to have such an intimate connection to other people, and allows for a kind of conversation between partners. It's a way to get to know new people (and old friends) in a way you couldn't by smalltalk. Or even deep talk. Guys. It's incredible.
Blues dancing brings such a diverse crowd out every week. People from all walks of life come to enjoy some good solid social dancing, and first-timers are plentiful every week. So don't be afraid :)
One thing I love about Light Blues is the sense of a tight-knit community. Regulars and beginners alike are part of an awesome family of friends having a great time together. The crowd is so accepting of everyone who walks in the door, and always excited to teach them the ropes. You can come to Blues not knowing anything about it, and ask anyone to teach you, and they'd be more than happy to. They even have specific tutors who really know what they're doing. So don't worry if you don't know how to dance! You can learn, and even if it takes a while, you'll have a blast hanging out in the meantime.
A great thing about blues dancing is that it's so easy to make it your own. It's the most personally expressive dance style I've ever done. There are set moves, but you can easily fuse it with other dance styles, or your own thing. If you feel it, do it. I can throw in any stylizations that feel natural to me. Every person has their own distinctive style, like a dance fingerprint. It's so much fun to see someone who's just learning start to put their own spin on things. You get to see their personality come out in their dancing, which is why I think you get to know so much about a person by dancing blues with them.
So the best thing about blues.
When you get really good at it, you can have some really incredible intimate dances. Now let's be clear, I don't mean sexual, although some people choose to take it that direction. I mean intimate as in intensely personal. You both make yourself completely open and vulnerable. And when you do it right, it's like you can see that person you're dancing with in a new, beautiful way. You feel their emotions through your physical connection, you understand them in a way words don't describe.
And I think that's why the blues community is so closely woven together. We have these amazingly personal bonding experiences with each other, and become incredibly comfortable with each other. We come to care about and love each other through dance. What greater joy is there in life?
And don't be intimidated by all this deeep stuff! Blues can also be very fun and lighthearted, like I said, it's whatever you make it.
Well there you have it, folks. Go blues dancing. You won't be disappointed. You're sure to learn some sweet moves and make some awesome new friends.
